The Oscar year of 2001 would see the first win by a black actress (and only win to date) with Halle Berry who won for Monster’s Ball. And on the same night, Denzel Washington won for Training Day. A Beautiful Mind was hit with a now infamous smear campaign. Russell Crowe sacrificed his Oscar for a poem. My life was in transition, as my daughter and I moved to Santa Monica.
