In 2011 The Artist won Best Picture, but the films I most loved with Hugo and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It was the first year I went to Telluride and the Cannes film fest, the best part of which was bringing my daughter with me. This was also the year The Help was in the Best Picture race and I lost many readers by advocating so hard for Viola Davis. At the time I believed it was the right thing to do. In the years since I’ve come to realize that it wasn’t my place and I can see why it turned off readers. I was a “white savior” of sorts, believing I could make the difference.
Either which way, going to the Oscars for the first time as a member of the press was also a highlight. Here are some photos from that year in Cannes and at the Oscars.
