Hey Sasha, I signed up for this a couple years ago, while it was kind of dormant. And for some reason, the old episodes were not showing in the history. When I saw that my subscriptions were over 100 I thought that was too many and pruned some that weren’t publishing currently. I had not seen any available eposodes.
I just found it again, and now it has the whole history. Your writing shows courage, compassion and a conscience; and is so moving. You write from the heart and it lands. You are the best.
I want you to know I saw EVERY nominated movie that year as a hobby not as a reporter or critic, but of course I have my opinion, they are like a**holes ya know. I actually wanted to know what the academy thought was great and why and it spurred me to see every nominated film for quite a few years. My thoughts on 2014 first. It was not a good year for movies. If Gone Girl was the zeitgeist from that year, I think it explains everything. I hardly remember any of those movies Gone Girl included. My favorite film was Birdman, because it aptly skewered fame and was literally two hours in time, that’s it…it took only two hours to size up an industry that awards gold statues to itself and I don’t just mean the Oscar’s. I mean every self important person who thinks life has meaning…it doesn’t. That’s actually the hardest lesson you will ever learn. And that is Birdman. We all want to be the superhero and have meaning all at the same time and when you realize none of that matters it feels like two hours went by instead of your whole life and you can finally live or die as it goes. It was a movie about life and the biggest lesson you will ever learn…you don’t matter. It’s why the saints are held up as icons of selflessness, heroes of virtue, who die to themselves for the greater good of all and God. Anyway, people write books on that topic. Or movies I guess. Or acceptance speeches that mean nothing about the movie they acted in, like poor Patricia feigning sainthood. Who were those charities? Boyhood? What a boring boy. I guess that’s the point.
So, Gone Girl was absolutely fake to me. It could have never happened and the commentary, while funny, was completely insane. It made no sense. It was no Silence of the Lambs psycho, it was feminist psycho. That doesn’t make it good, it makes it Rosie O’Donnell on steroids surprised her kid turned out straight, insane. It was great acting but its meaning made no sense because it could have never actually happened.
So back to what the academy thinks is great, the reason for my hobby and my thoughts are this. They award for bodies of work as you have mentioned. I used to eat spaghetti at Mad Italian and at every meal, I said this is the best spaghetti, cumulative effect. Because it was never just that one plate of spaghetti, it was every plate I’d eaten right there, every time. Hence the Oscars and really that Gold Statue is the best spaghetti, cumulative effect some bodies are just like the first plate.
So anyway, no huge revelations here, but I do want to say, I never met a woman who was Gone Girl. It seemed like it was what every girl wanted to say, but really as a gay man I never heard them say it and I’ve heard from a lot of women dissed by men…it just doesn’t make sense to me. You, Agent Starling, my mother, my sister, real women everywhere. Unfortunately Glenn Close…yes, Rosamund Pike, no.
I don’t care for pets, but I love animals, your dog is the cutest. My brother and sister with Down Syndrome are my pride and joy as I am their Guardian. It’s hard work but I love every second. I always hope we could get to know each other better because I swear we could talk for hours, but you are way more big time than me. Remember life has no meaning, the essence of humility. Peace!
Sasha, this was like reading something similar to what was found in and urn that contained The Dead Sea Scrolls.. From a time past that I barely knew, but revived for my enjoyment and enlightenment today.
Maybe straying into risky territory, but could be the beginning of a script, made into a major motion picture. I see or imagine its potential.
My dad rarely watched tv. Only a handful of times he sat down with us in the downstairs family room, and even then only for a few minutes.
He took us to see Serpico, Dr Doolittle, Lady Sings The Blues, The Yellow Submarine, Dr Zhivago, and the last one was Rocky in 1976. Oh, and Fiddler On The Roof of course -- that might have been the first one, when I was about 9.
One Friday or Saturday night in 1973, dad came out of his study and sat down with us for a few minutes while "Old Yeller" was on. He was from a long line of racists, both sides of my family are from Birmingham, Alabama, but he always tried his best to make us not racists.
The part about Jack made me well-up with tears like during the Old Yeller movie.

Eddie, nicely written! Thank you!
Sasha, renewed today. BTW, today was the anniversary of LBJ's speech on The War On Poverty. Pure BS.
His view of "Negroes" was that they'd vote "D" for the next 100 years. He viewed MLK as a PAWN.
Sasha, if I may say so, I think you are incredible(!) in many ways.
Thank you. God bless you!!!
:)
This is one for the archives /saved episodes file,Sasha. Thank you. It touched my heart.

But who to play you?
Thank you Sasha--you are such a gift.

What a wonderful memoir!!!!
The part about Jack made me cry.
So sweet. So real.
If you can hang in with him, I hope you don’t put him down. People will tell you you must - but a natural death is better…
My 2cents.
